hrm. your theory doesn't apply to me, as i don't make money from KDE and Qt. i
just want a good product that allows for the cost-sharing dynamics outlined
in Bruce's paper. i don't see that happening solely on the efforts here.

that said, why do you feel the need to try and paint those who disagree with
you as being profit-motive driven, fear-stricken unreasonables?

you are right that neither Bruce nor User Linux alone can kill off one piece
of software or another, as there are choices elsewhere. while software that
isn't distributed doesn't have much of a life, it is the distribution that is
at greater risk based on its decisions because there are multiple sources of
distribution.

it is a testament to the strength of the concept of a network of companies
supporting a cost-sharing funded distribution that some are willing to
discuss it at length when they feel that the decisions are wrong, and
therefore a threat to the idea.

and it's a testament to the project itself that the misleading motivation of
simplification of choice is trumping cooperation and community building.

i was surprised when Bruce replied to the proposal at all, let alone as he
did. it drove a clear division through a minefield that some were trying to
clear. had he simply moved on, probably most everyone would have moved on as
well. this is the consequence of responsibility that comes with leadership. i
was even more amazed when he later removed his original reply and replaced it
with something else quite different. i was undeniably sad to see it go up on
Slashdot, as the ensuing morass in the talkbacks was innevitable and
completely useless.
