the nice Free Software centralized management tools, or even just nice GUI's 
period, for LDAP are nascent. there are a couple of not-too -bad web 
interfaces for openLDAP2, but even they are more difficult than necessary. 
fortunately, i'm aware of at least 2 projects underway to address this niche, 
so this situation will likely be changing in the not-so-distant-future. =)

there's also quite a few openldap HOWTOs for various things, such as using it 
with Samba (http://www.unav.es/cti/ldap-smb/smb-ldap-3-howto.html),
