No.  I've looked into that, and TERM=linux is very hardcoded in init/main.c.  
I think your best bet is just to stick the proper value in .profile or 
whatever your dotfile of choice is.

This sounds like term strangeness to me.  If you can show that it's a UML bug, 
I'll fix it.
