The patch to fix the gcc issue is already in Linus's tree:
http://git.kernel.org/linus/534e3ad

Your kernel panics because it cannot mount the root fs.
Does it work with hostfs?
e.g: ./linux rootfstype=hostfs init=/bin/sh
