Well I guess that solved it. I erased the old .config so I'm not sure 
exactly what parameters were important but I did these steps

$ rm .config
$ make defconfig ARCH=um
$ make ARCH=um
./linux ubda=... ubdb=... root=/dev/ubda

And it worked. Using ubd0 did not work, only ubda would.
