We have SNMP enabled on our host machines, and use RTG
(http://rtg.sourceforge.net) to do our traffic analysis (it gets the
information from the tuntap interface itself, which would be noi
different than if it was querying a router).

Since the data is kept in a MySQL database, it does not suffer from the
"averaging out" that occurs with MRTG, and we can then charge our
clients based on total traffic used or 95th percentile. You can also
write your own scripts (PHP, Perl, etc.) to manipulate the data in the
database however you wish.

It generates MRTG-style graphs as well, so you can get a good overview
of the traffic.

I hope this helps.
