  a) Is this with a stock kernel or a gentoo kernel?
     (sorry, but gentoo has a poor reputation for quality control)

  b) can you build a kernel for i386? (no UML)
     This would be a cross-compile build.

  c) are you using an i386 compiler, or and amd64 compiler?
     You will need a cross-compiler!
