That was the normal behavior until Unison 2.40.1: a directory was
either fully copied or not at all. As a consequence, the socket file
prevents the synchronization of directory /var. One workaround is to
explicitly creates the directory /var/run/cups in /home/unison_backup.
Another workaround is to ignore file cups.sock (and all other socket
files).
Unison 2.40.1 will synchronize a directory even if it contains socket
files (or more generally if there are some errors during update
detection). The socket files will not be synchronized, though.
