Thank you all very much for your replies. I'm now that little but more
knowledgeable now regarding what unison does. :)
A commercial solution isn't an option in our situation, we'd much
prefer to stay open source.
We have pretty much decided to go with a custom transport solution for
small numbers of file changes, and possibly rsync for larger numbers.
The reason why I though unison might be better for this purpose than
rsync is that (as I understand it) rsync works by working out what is
different between to two hosts and sending than information, while in
my case I only want to send what has changed on the server to the
remote host. Working out the differences is a waste of time in this
case as the server sending process doesn't need to care about anything
that is already on the remote system. Subtle difference, but it's
there. I understood unison to store a local 'cache' of the sync status
which I thought might have made figuring out this very quick and with
zero load on the client (prior to the actual transfer taking place).
