No surprise to me. Between 2 windows systems, the fastest way would be
to use msft synctoy. You can download that from the msft webpage.
Synctoy is far less powerful than unison, but looking at the time to
decide whether you have changes on the windows side, it is a magnitude
faster. With synctoy, you should use simple SMB connections.
Real world example: 20.000 files need here 45 minutes with unison, about
5 minutes with synctoy. And that is key: the duration depends on the
amount of files, not on the volume. My guess: unison on linux checks
changes by reading i-nodes, what is fast and on windows by reading each
files attributes, what is slow. Synctoy checks directory structures on
windows, what is fast again ....
Following my experience, the difference between unison via ssh or SMB is
neglectable in the comparison phase. However, when it comes to transfer
data, ssh is definitely a bottleneck (you may wait 90 minutes for a
CD-image to transfer on a local LAN).
In addition, the unison server on windows (we run it with cygwin) is
kind of slow and shows some slowdown, when a system has been up and
running for some weeks.
