I sometimes use Unison from wireless Internet cafes or from open
wireless networks that I find in the street. :-)

This means my network connection can suddenly disappear. I also cannot
know if the 11 Mbps wireless network connects to the Internet via 10
Mbps broadband, 512 kbps ADSL or 128 kbps ISDN. I want to use what I
have, when I have it.

When I get a connection, I first send out my mail queue (I run
sendmail + Linux on my laptop), then I download my incoming mail over
POP (tunneled through SSH). If I have more time, I use Unison to
synchronize / backup my working files and photos from my digital
camera.

It would be great if Unison would not always open 50 parallel file
transfers, but instead would maximize the chance that complete files
are transferred over the available bandwidth. For example, it could
start to transfer some small files while monitoring the available
bandwidth. It could then gradually go to larger files, and start only
a few parallel transfers for the biggest files. Or perhaps start out
with 45 parallel transfers for small files and 5 transfers for big
files, just like some motorways have a separate lane for trucks.

I run Unison 2.9.1 and I'm offline when I write this, so I haven't
been able to check if this is already implemented in a newer version.
