FWIW:

I bought a Canon DS 640 scanner via Amazon. It has its pluses and
minuses. I sent it back because, despite being fast, reasonably high
quality and not too expensive, it has anumber of drawbacks forme - no
paper catcher on the back, no real feeder on the front, and the
right-side "cuide" was a slider that never stayed in position.

I suppose I'll have to put up with my sometimes fast, sometimes
crawling HP until it dies. Then I'll look at spending some serious
money on a good sheet-feeder with speed and quality.
