Have you tried to use aptitude?

It uses the same syntax as apt-get and can suggest a few options to resolve
the conflicts...

well ... in case of the toolchain PPA this is the only way to get a<br>
(semi) supported gcc version for an older release ...<br>

if the source code you build for your job requires gcc5 features but<br>
your company only supports 14.04 installs on the workstations this PPA<br>
is provided by the ubuntu toolchain team for you ...  <br>
(though preferably you would use a chroot and not taint your host<br>
system with such a hackery ... to not break ... well ... upgrades :P )<br>
