It's actually quite simple to make Windows boot from another partition, but
it requires fiddling with grub, so I agree with that last.

FYI, if you have Windows on, say, the 2nd partition, you add to the grub
boot stanza for Windows:
 hide (hd0,0)

Then Windows can't even see the first partition, and believes it _is_ on the
first.
