The original line is:

$mbox = @imap_open( "{" . $config["imap_server"] . "/pop3:" . $c
onfig["imap_port"] . "}", $login["username"], $login["password"], 
OP_HALFOPEN );

So I also stripped OP_HALFOPEN.

The original version fails with both an old Netscape Messaging Server 
4.1 Patch 1 and UW toolkit's ipop3d version 2004.89 (imap-2004b).

I run TWIG on a Debian testing system with PHP Version 4.3.10-9. 
Unfortunately test.php tells me that c-client is from 2001
