i think others have said enough on this subject, but i just want to point out
once other thing...

twig is not 'putting' the mail anywhere. twig is opening the users imap INBOX,
and reading mail. if your system is setup so that this means ~/mbox (the
default for uwimap) then the imap server is moving the mail by default.

on my systems (i use qmail) i deliver mail into ~/mbox to start with. this way
i dont have a large world funkable mail spool. also helps alot with quotas. i
suggest you modify your mail config to drop into ~/mbox as well. this, along
with fixing the muttrc should clear up all your problems
