Fortunately, I did not receive a lot of
responses about my problem. I received a
message from reiffin@ic.eecs.berkeley.edu
saying I could try getting a keyboard with
a really long cable. Although humorous, it
wasn't the solution I needed (thanks anyway
Judd).  I also got a message from Tom Blinn
of DEC who suggested that it may be because
the graphics card may be set to 640x480 instead
of 1280x1024. This sounded very much like the
problem, but I found out that it wasn't the
graphics card itself, but the display characteristics.
In the /var/X11/xdm/Xservers file I needed to
change it from the default of 1024 to 1280 and 
after reboot, it was much more readable. Thanks
