The consesus was "i usually only see that when /usr
failed to mount for some reason" and indeed, my re3c
was in stated of failed.

I couldnt access arc for some reason, it was just
hanging. So i decided reload the firmware for
AlphaBIOS, pfio and srmflash(updated this from v5.7-4
to v5.8-2). Others I simply reloaded same up-to-date
versions.

After this, i was able to arc, and make drive Optimal.
At least for now I am up....but will probably work on
replacing the drive soon.

_Thanks all for prompt replies, namely::Iain Barker
, Martin_Rønde_Andersen; Brusche, Johan; Charles
Ballowe and lastly Warren Liang in order of arrival.
