Well.  Just in case you were wondering, I have found the solution to my
installupdate problem.  I came into work this morning to find a wonderful email
from Maria Gilliland.  This is what she said:

"Don't make root bigger. I am 99% sure your problem is inodes.

The "df -i" command will show you have no free inodes in some file systems.
This will be as a result of running quotacheck. It's buggy and screws up the
file system info. A reboot will fix it. A patch is available from hp."

And sure enough.  I did a df -i, and the root filesystem had 0 free inodes.  I
rebooted the system, and it went back up to something like 600,000 free inodes.
I tried the installupdate again, and it is running fine.  I guess I should let
the HP tech support guy know that HP has a patch for this problem. ;)
