Subject: Increase root filesystem space?

Is it possible to increase the size of the root partition? I didn't think there
was any way to do this after the OS is installed. Let me explain:
I am having a problem upgrading my ES40 from 5.1a to 5.1b. Basically the part
of the installupdate where it checks for appropriate filesystem space is a
little screwey as you can see:

"If software subsets are removed, the update install will need to be
continued so that the Total Needed value can be updated to reflect
the removal of software that was previously installed.

 Free Space (Mbytes)
 -------------------
 Total Needed
 Total Available

  1) Remove Core, Crash, and Extra Kernel Files
  2) Remove Unprotected Customized Files (.PreUPD)
  3) Remove Software Subsets
  4) Continue Update Installation
  5) Exit Update Installation"

Notice the parts where it says Total needed and Total available are blank. I
put a call into HP, and the tech guy checked our space and he says it seems like
more than enough space, so he is thinking it is something with the installupdate
script itself. While he is checking out the details of the script, he suggested
that I try increasing the size of my root partition to 512MB (from its current
256MB) and try the install again. So, I thought I was always told that you
cannot increase the size of the root partition, but this HP tech seems to think
otherwise. So if it is possible, does anyone know how I would go about doing
this? Or has anyone else had a similar experience with the 5.1b installupdate?
TIA Oh, and just FYI, here is a df of my current system:

Filesystem 512-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted
on
root_domain#root 524288 183612 326256 37% /
usr_domain#usr 5671696 1628662 3963456 30% /usr
usr_domain#var 5671696 41458 3963456 2% /var
