After sending this I discover some more tickets related to remote
authentication [1][2][3].

Side-note: Regarding #6879 I feel it would be better to directly point
at discussion and relevant ticket comments, that seem related, if
you're aware of them. And make sure to update tickets according to
possible discussion results, that may be reached here, to connect all
the pieces for others coming after you.

Trying to improve the situation just now I've made #6879 the central
place to refer to. Keep it going on.
