Subversion/tortoise can handle all types of files, regardless of their
origin or format. However, unless those CAD files are text based and
merge-friendly, the commit/update/merge default way in Subversion might not
be your first choice. However, you can easily configure it to use locks on
binary files so you can still use it.

To best give you an answer you should outline the criteria you will use to
determine which such system to use. For instance, what do you mean by "data
management software" and what would it do that your normal
save-on-a-common-fileshare can't do.
