Tomcat the reference implementation?

------- Additional Comments From craig.mcclanahan@sun.com 2004-03-31 21:55 -------
Jess, the only problem with what you are saying is that it is factually
incorrect (or, in normal lay person speak), a lie.

What the Tomcat community should want is to say that they have passed the
compatibility tests for the servlet and JSP APIs. Thanks to work by Apache with
the Java Community Process, it is possible for nonprofit organizations like
Apache to accomplish this goal. The Tomcat development team hasn't yet chosen
to formally test its implementation (although, since there are Sun committers
working on Tomcat, it's been informally tested).

Tomcat never has been, is not, and most likely never will be the "official" RI
for the servlet and JSP APIs ... that's totally up to the spec lead for the
corresponding JSRs (most recently, JSR-152 for JSP 2.0 and JSR-154 for Servlet
2.4). More information on how this all works can be found at the JCP web site
(http://jcp.org).

In the mean time, I'm going to go ahead and tweak the Bugzilla descriptions, so
don't bother to reopen the bug report.
