Just to let you folks know how this turned out, I added one option
to both thttpd and mini_httpd: -M maxage, or in the config file maxage=n.
If it's present then the server adds headers to all responses:
  Cache-Control: max-age=nnn
  Expires: now+nnn
This is pretty rudimentary but should suffice for now.
