It was still pointing to some Word 2003 files, specifically the .lex. Solut=
ion (And fortunately only a dozen users on this server):

Go to \HKU\userid\software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\

And rename 1.0 to 1.0old or similar.

The actual problem I think was \HKU\userid\software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\=
Proofing Tools\1.0\override\en-US where the DLL and LEX key point to non-ex=
istent files.

Thanks for thoughts though.

i think the dictionaries are stored in the user's profile under application=
 data.  Filemon from sysinternals should reveal it though.
