Ola.

Vou falar de pequenos detalhes: em TeX, sinais de relacao (=, <, etc)
ou operadores binarios (+, -, etc) sao formatados de modo especial
quando TeX acha que eles tem uma coisa de cada lado.

Rode

\usepackage{amsmath}
\begin{align}
  x =& -2a_1 + \text{formula imensa} +\\
     & + a_n
\end{align}

Note que o & depois do igual, e o \\ depois do + dao um espacamento
estranho.  O - depois do & estah interpretado como operacao, e nao
sinal do 2.  Para enganar TeX (para seu bem), basta colocar um {} no
lugar certo e tudo se resolve. Compare o resultado com

\begin{align}
  x = {} & {-2} a_1 + \text{formula imensa} + {}\\
         & {} + a_n
\end{align}

No exemplo que o Rubens deu, vemos exatamente isso em todas as linhas.
 Eh que pouca gente nota que isso eh assim.

Tente
\begin{equation}
\begin{split}
\text{\textit{Activity}} = {} &\text{Total organic carbon}+{}\\
 &\text{Litter depth} + \text{Fallen branches} + \text{\textit{Genus}} +{} \\
