You're probably using TagLib::FileRef. 
At least so did I, at first.

There are other parts of the API that accept files
regardless of extension:

TagLib::FLAC::File
TagLib::MPC::File
TagLib::MPEG::File
TagLib::Ogg::File

IIRC.

Just add your own extension heuristic, or whatever probing
API your system / desktop environment affords you.
