Thanks.  Ricardo was correct, I had forgotten to check the
SMTP authentification box.  Most everything is working fine right now
as I get to know the different options, except the mailboxes still
don't highlight at the same time as the email itself and the Help
file is either locking up the computer or not opening at all
(it may be related to what else is open.  There was a suggestion I get
a more recent version of GTK to run and compile with, but while I'm no
computer dummy, I've never compiled anything with GTK and it's not
clear to me how to do it with Sylpheed. The instructions in the manual
seem like shorthand.  So, I'm living with the Win32 direct download and
unpack version for now.
