Sorry the delay. I tested some other themes under Gnome (with gtk1
counterparts) and they've worked. I'll contact the Nuvola developer to
report this.

By the way, I found out there is a "GTK+ theme switching utility", for
both GTK+ 1.x and 2.x; the debian package is called gtk-theme-switch.
