Well, this is a personal view. My view is that a mailing-list is kind of an
archive, too. So the list itself is more or less a container for all
sub-threads regarding a certain subject. I cannot see the necessity that all
readers must follow all threads. In case of LKML anyone would hardly be able
to. But it is very handy to use it as an information archive nevertheless.
In fact it is a lot better than your idea of a split-up of too big mailing
lists into several pieces where all people are reading all threads. Because you
loose the ability to browse through all loosely related threads for certain
information.
After all you cannot be sure that all interesting topics are showing up in your
preferred (read subscribed) sub-list, so you will sooner or later be subscribed
to all of them anyways ;-)
