Of course Sylpheed can handle Japanese, since I'm Japanese and I need
to read Japanese messages :)

To make Sylpheed handle Japanese, the following things are required.

* The system (libc) supports Japanese locales
* Environment variables for locale (LANG etc.) are set to Japanese
  locale (ja_JP.eucJP)
* Specifying Japanese fonts in GTK+/Sylpheed
