Subject: [Swatch-users] Installation of Swatch under RH 7.x

Dear Swatchers,

First off, some idle flattery: swatch is tops. :)

I've been using swatch 2.2 using a 161-entry .swatchrc file, integrated
into an audit_script that I execute as a root forced command under
SSH. Combined with a cvs -nq update on configuration files and some
other watchdog activity, it first reviews the week so far with:

  swatch -p 'sort -Mm /var/log/{maillog,messages,secure}'

and then continues in real time:

  swatch -t '-q /var/log/{maillog,messages,secure}'

This has been in constant use on a Red Hat 6.0 box; I run it via SSH
through our firewall so that I can monitor (and sometimes make a remote
copy of) the logging of critical functions. Many times I have rescued
users from problems, calling or e-mailing them before they were even
aware of what their problem was! Proactive system administration at
its best. :)

Anyway, I'm determined to carry on this tradition on the server that is
replacing the 6.0 box. Now that I'm using Red Hat 7.2 (and 7.1 at
home), though, I'm having a very difficult time locating and installing
the right pieces.

Red Hat, for whatever reason, has stopped supporting swatch since the
6.2 release of powertools. :(

So these are the options as I see them:

+--- Certainty index (0 = hopeless, 9 = outrageous confidence)
| +- Preference level (0 = this will keep me up at night, 9 = cool)

7 5 swatch-3.0b4-1.noarch.rpm:RH 6.2 powertools Old versions, wrong doc path

What a headache...I'd like to remain RPM-based, but maybe I can't here.

For the perl modules, the only RPM for perl-File-Tail is from RH 6.2.
The RH 6.2 files should all work together, but they are older versions
of the modules and don't comply with the 7.x /usr/share/doc path.

I'd like to use a SRPM for building a 7.x RPM with swatch-3.0.4.tar.gz,
and use the RH 7.1 CPAN RPM's where possible, but perl-File-Tail from
6.2. I don't know what impact the site_perl/n.mmm may have...

Obviously other people have done this (unless the withheld support from
Red Hat has thinned the ranks considerably).

Or I could just go on using the 2.2 version... :P

TIA,

  Jonathan
