I have a perfectly functioning X-server, until I restart it, when the screen
becomes garbled. The only cure for this is to reboot. This problem arrived
with SuSE 9.0 - never had any problem with SuSE 8.2.

Has anyone had a similar problem and been able to fix it?

Details are:

Card GeForce4 420 Go
XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1 with latest patches from SuSE online upgrade
Driver nvidia from SuSE online upgrade (but same problem with nv)

XF86Config is setup to give me a 1024x768 res. screen by default. This works
fine in every respect when the server is started for the first time after
boot, either from xdm or startx. However, if the server is subsequently
restarted, either by a user logging out under xdm, or explicitly killing the
server and then restarting using startx, then the screen is garbled (looks
`stripy' as if the modeline is wrong). I normally only have one 1024x768 and
one 800x600 modeline in my XF86Config.

If XF86Config is altered to give 800x600 res. by default, then the garbled
screen no longer occurs. I can restart X as often as I like a get an 800x600
screen, BUT, I then have the problem reported earlier this month of a working
mouse that has no visible pointer.

Any thoughts gratefully received.
