It depends on the card. I'm sure that most/all cards are not recognized
with the default 2.2 kernel.
You can try the 2.4.1 kernel and the ramdisk.image.deflt.gz, it should
work at least with a Promise IDE controller. But it is unconfirmed if it
really works.

If in doubt: post the `lspci` output.
