Just so I have some clues to work with.
Is the fact I am getting a movable X cursor on the win98 machine a sign I am
actually conected to the server? But just not quite far enough?

You will need to restart kdm. You can *probably* do this by logging on to
a text console as root, then typing:
init 3
init 5
This works on Red Hat-derived systems. YMMV.
Rebooting the machine will definitely pick up the new changes, but is not
necessary.
