Even though the RFC's are clear some software writers have great trouble
following them. RFC974 appears to especially confuse, sometimes getting 
completly ignored, sometimes caching DNS data, because the writer thinks
it will make things more efficent. (N.B. the latter is best left to
nameservers, since they actually take note of the "TTL" fields.)

(Though in one case ignoring RFC's is probably deliberate, since it's
apparently the policy of a certain American company.)

(Obvious question, which is dumbest in this situation, the software,
the school or the individual who made the decision to use it. Though saying
that the reports on both the Becta and NGFL websites on this kind of software
contain a large proportion of promotional material from the software 
companies.)
