I think that the key that you missed here is "Partition /dev/hda5 is mounted 
with write permissions, cannot check it".  Check your boot parameters; your 
kernel is mounting your root f/s r/w instead of r/o, which is causing the 
fsck to fail.  Someplace in your boot params, add "ro" (LILO / Grub)?
