I am also a  poor unemployed 8.1 user. before that I was a poor unemployed 8.0 
user. Most of the files for 8.1 was eventually put on an ftp server. I 
downloaded all of them on a separate partition and then made a regular 
install. It all went very well and faster than having the distro on cd.
