This didn't help and neither the apt-get rerun.

I started playing around some more with the font settings in kmail. Suddenly 
it started working again. I'm using Nimbus sans at the moment. It seems some 
fonts stoped working after teh upgrade. One of them is helvetica.

The strange thing is that it only affected the window with the actual mail. 
Not the list windows.
