I don't know about that, but the old yast1 did calculate an estimate of 
needed space on all partititions and warned if it was insufficient (you 
could ignore it). Even so, during the install (upgrade from 7.3 to 8.1) 
my disk run out of space: surely this could have been detected and the 
install stopped.
