You can still use xscreensaver while running KDE even without KDE 3.1 or Suse 
8.1.  Xscreensaver comes with Suse 8.0.  Just disable the KDE screensaver, 
run "xscreensaver-demo" (w/out quotation marks) to set up xscreensaver the 
way you want it, and then edit your .xinitrc file to add "xscreensaver &" (no 
quotes) to the area it designates for adding your own commands..
