ROFL!

'recompile' isn't a command.  It's the next step that you have to do.

Try:

  make clean
  make dep
  make bzlilo

then

  make modules
  make modules_install.

I would recommend reading the Kernel-HOWTO, in particular:

  http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO-5.html
