Maybe the way to go is from within the terminal/console based YaST not the X version?

I did upgrade KDE from within KDE in SuSE 8.2. It caused me so many problems that I \
actually had to resort to a reboot. X got in heck of a state and I almost ended in a \
partial upgrade situation where I couldn't run any applications from KDE.
Everything is good now but if I were to do it again it would be from a non-X shell. \
Given how convoluted my process was I can't really help, aside from this cautionary \
tale.
