I cannot explain, but confirm such a behaviour. Throughout the years of 
running KDE I occasionally lost various config files and dirs after crashes 
and freezes. I never found out why this had happened, I had to accept that 
hours of work were gone with the freeze... ;)

As that was borne in on me, I am backing up important files and dirs (exactly: 
I am mirroring the whole sys to another device). Since then I meet my fate 
calmly.
