This is the exact same problem I have.

I mailed SuSE support and Stefan Fent said:

I don't think it is the bios or the bus since I had Redhat installed on the
machine when I got it and there where no problems. It may well be that
the SuSE compilation of Xserver does not know something about the
Alphastation?

Could *anyone* who has an AlphaStation please post their spec and state
whether they have the above error when trying to run KDE. Please post even
you don't have errors so that we can try and nail down the problem and at
least find what configurations work.

Here are my specs

AlphaStation 200 4/100
SuSE 6.3 full_vm kernel
S3 Virge Graphics adapter
XFree SVGA XServer
Bios 2.05
Firmware ARC 4.57

Here are Dan's specs

AlphaStation 400 4/233
SuSE 6.3 Avanti kernel with SRM boot
Digital ZLXp Graphics Controller
XF86_TGA server
(Dan please post your bios and firmware versions for in case)

Thanks all for your help.

Regards
Justin
