After a lot of trials (several very large checkouts and exports) I haven't seen
any issue anymore. So I'd say we can call this issue fixed, as soon you can cut
a new serf release with the necessary set of fixes (and perhaps bump the
recommended/required serf versions in svn).

I haven't seen the "insufficient buffer space" error anymore. Should I run into
it again, I will try to get some more information and open a new issue for it.
