The benefits are preventing accidentally modifying the pristine files as a side effect of recursive 
operations (find -exec) or of misbehaving diff tools (svn diff --diff-cmd=sh -x =(echo 'echo >> $5')).

What is a reason for not making the pristines read-only on Unixes?
