I think we found a work-around. Adding the line

MaxMemFree 512

...to httpd.conf seems to solve the problem (though only time will really 
tell). See http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/mod/mpm_common.html#maxmemfree for 
more details on what this line does, but before we added it, the memory was 
steadily increasing as we were doing svn list, but after adding that line, the 
memory usage regularily came back down (around 30 megs) and we haven't been 
able to reproduce the problem since (24 hours and counting).

I will repost here if it happens again.
