I have found that adding

MaxRequestsPerChild 512

to the httpd.conf, while not a real fix for the problem, is so far an effective
sticking plaster. It causes the httpd child process to be restarted in a
controlled fashion before it runs out of memory and significantly reduces the
perceived impact on users.
