  Notice how the space in "my dir" seems to the root of the problem. If 
  the space is replaced with "%20" the import is performed as expected.

+ This is actually deliberate -- Subversion depends on the URL already
+ having the escape codes in it.  (It may need to be documented,
+ however, and obviously it would be nice if Subversion could notice
+ some common bogus URLs right away.)
